Zak Crawley Unaware of Stokes' Provocative 'Weak Men' Comments

The English opener Crawley has indicated he was not familiar with comments from skipper Stokes regarding the dressing room not being "those lacking fortitude".

The all-rounder delivered this message in multiple interviews in the wake of England's defeat in the second Ashes series against the Australians previously.

Ahead of the Adelaide Test, where the visitors now face a series loss with a match to spare, the captain noted he had allowed his sentiment to "circulate freely" within the playing group.

"I have completed the necessary discussions over the past two days that I required," said Stokes.

But, after the opener made a knock of 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he stated: "I missed those remarks."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. Our approach is to take everything that is said in the press with a pinch of salt," Crawley continued.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

The captain issued his "fragile individuals" comment after his side suffered a loss in the second Test to fall 2-0 down.

The England squad subsequently took a holiday to Noosa in the gap between the second and third Tests.

Prior to this match, Stokes said his players had held "raw" talks and he had asked them to "show a bit of dog" in their effort to remain in contention in the series.

Nevertheless, Crawley stated the guidance from the captain and head coach McCullum had stayed consistent with their prior tenure in charge.

"It's been very positive, unchanged," noted the opener. "It's just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. It felt like we were capable of an extraordinary feat entering this Test."

The Hosts On the Verge of Rapid Series Victory

The opener's wicket late on Saturday came during a crucial triple-strike by Australian spinner Lyon.

Lyon's three wickets in 20 deliveries – including the wickets of Harry Brook and Ben Stokes – left England 207-6 chasing a notional total of 435 runs.

Consequently, Australia require four wickets on Sunday's last day to secure an insurmountable 3-0 lead after three matches played.

Defeat will extend the English team's drought in this country to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth successive away Ashes series loss.

This series will be completed in only 11 days of cricket – with England losing the initial matches in two and four days respectively.

The last time 1921, when Australia sealed victory in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been determined so quickly. The hosts have also triumphed in eleven days on two other occasions in the modern era.

"It's disheartening," said the batsman. "We came here to win the Ashes and we're facing elimination at this point."

"There remains plenty to play for and we will definitely view it with that mindset," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been tough. They're a formidable side. It was always going to be hard coming here against them. They entered as the front-runners and they've proven why."

Ollie Pope's Position In Question

Although Crawley's performance in Adelaide probably answers doubts about his immediate place in the side, Ollie Pope looks under immense pressure for his spot in the fourth Test on Boxing Day.

Pope was out for 17 runs in England's second knock on Saturday, adding to his modest returns against the old enemy.

Across 16 Ashes innings, Pope has never made a half-century and averages 17.62.

Only one other English batsman in over a century – Amiss – has featured as many times in the top order in Ashes Tests and recorded a lower average.

But, Crawley said any suggestion Pope is under the microscope originates with "the media" – meaning the journalists – "and not within the team."

"We all know of his considerable talent," said Crawley. "Ollie has enjoyed a productive year to be frank."

"He has produced some really good knocks. This is noise externally. There is no chat of that nature on Ollie in the camp," Crawley finished.
