This New Horror Film Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Might Make or Break Your Romantic Bond.

Here's a test for long-term couples who are fans of scary movies: Settle in with your partner and view Together. This critically acclaimed 2025 movie recently had its launch on a streaming platform on the Hulu service. At first glance, it might appear like typical biological terror, but beneath Together exists a intense contemplation about how we choose to love each other.

A Directorial Debut Delving into The Nuances of Love

Together is the introductory feature for director Michael Shanks. It stars the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Millie and Tim, partners that have remained a couple for over ten years. Having wed in actuality in 2017, the two stars bring a special spark to their roles, masterfully depicting both the good and bad of a long-term relationship.

The plot begins when Millie and Tim transition from the urban environment to the rural area for Millie’s job. A familiar story element, of course, but that’s mostly where the tropes end. Together evolves into as much a psychological exploration of the partnership as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While walking near their rural residence, a storm hits, and the protagonists tumble into an subterranean cavern. After spending the night there and managing to escape, a mysterious influence begins influencing the couple. This force induces a paranormal intimacy between them that goes far beyond typical partnership.

The entire film is a slow burn of scares, blending bits of fever-dream horrors, unsettling (but tastefully done) biological grotesqueries, and authentically humorous exchanges (sometimes amidst something disturbing). Michael Shanks weaves these elements together seamlessly and delivers them in a consistently growing atmosphere of fear.

Complex Characterizations

A significant portion of Together is solely Brie and Franco, and they deftly portray numerous complexities to the partnership at the film's core. Millie's sense of self and sense of connection is waning due to a distance. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his reluctance to chase only his floundering music career inexorably rises.

In contrast, Tim's character senses confinement and cut off by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve relocated rural and far away from his network of friends. He is terrified of the notion of completely losing his personal autonomy in another person. This fear is intensified by the fact he can’t drive and needs Millie for mobility.

Shanks’ smartest move is that he refrains from painting one partner or the other the obvious villain.

The couple face the type of challenges that come with long-term unions after ten years. Fundamentally, they have affection for each other. They still laugh together, comfort one another, and are vulnerable at times. But below this facade, there’s an persistent undercurrent of doubt about their future together.

Allegory and Meaning

While the paranormal elements in Together act as a metaphor for these anxieties of excessive reliance and totally devoting oneself to a partner, the metaphor avoids being clumsy or pretentious. Instead, these visceral horror elements provide a ideal counterpart to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the horror and the drama work together in harmony.

A Debated Finale

Together’s ending, which remains unspoiled, has created disagreement on the film’s ultimate message about codependent relationships. Accounts suggest that those not in relationships have interpreted the film as a compelling reason for remaining unattached. Meanwhile, a few pairs experiencing tension found that the film ultimately assisted them resolve their issues.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own response could function as a great barometer of how you perceive partnership. Will the conclusion inspire anxiety and horror, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you recognize your own traits in either protagonist and feel frustration, or simply glance toward your significant other and utter, “I’d do that for you”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an experiment you can undertake right now.

Together is available to watch on Hulu's platform as of this moment.
