Our Top Album of 2025: Rosalía's Lux Takes the Premier Position.

Initially, this album might appear closer to a difficult academic quiz rather than the latest popular music project from a musician who just had a previous hit was a collaboration with a global pop star. Split across four separate movements and voiced in thirteen languages, it is a breathtaking symphonic album investigating female mystique, religious ascent, and physical transformation, frequently by way of the lens of various female saints. The dissolution of a relationship—a theme treated with raw openness on another major 2025 album—is shot skyward here, buoyed by the lush presence of a full symphony orchestra and work from a Pulitzer-winning songwriter among a vast list of collaborators. Its sheer daring by itself renders the work of contemporary artists look rather laughable.

Rising Above Academic Exercise

The fact that Lux succeeds in escape overly intellectual chin-stroking feels nothing short of miraculous, with complete credit going to the artist. While this is not the first time project to alchemize the past and the present, its ambitions are much higher here, and the balancing act more pronounced. What really raises this fourth release, outside of its multilayered tunes, rich compositions, and inherent theatricality, is an essential spirit of fun. Similar to the iconic Björk at her peak, you find a captivating sense to Rosalía's singing that pulls you up in its whirlwind. Even when she is breaking your heart in two, the listener nevertheless want to be right there for the journey.

A Signature Example of Joy

That playful spirit shines brightly on a stirring Italian ballad inspired by Saint Clare. It luxuriates in a sorrowful whirlpool over several moments. Then, all the music falls away, and we hear a spontaneous giggle and a comment before a hilariously exaggerated string surge crashes down like comedic force. The song immediately shifts to the frenetic track featuring galloping strings, an imposing choir, and a cameo role from the artist herself.

"The magic with Lux lies in the listener never exactly understand—nor wish to know—where you will go to next."

Almost every track concludes at a totally different point than where it began. A track explores the transient nature of celebrity with a delicate symphony before collapsing in digital chaos. Another, a cut echoing the artist's previous rhythmic work starts off moody and sinister, with prowling beats, before sudden traditional handclaps and an angelic chorus enter to soften the song's rough edges.

The Balance Between Experiment & Accessibility

A key balancing act on Lux is navigating the line between bold experimentation and broad accessibility. It is no coincidence that it has become her first work to break into the upper reaches of key charts: its heart contains a suite of truly undeniable hits. One track performed entirely in English swells around a refrain that feels to collect more and more nagging melodies as it spins upward. This trick is echoed by another powerful ballad that expands and contracts, weaving multiple tunes as a complex weave.

  • A dance-infused song charms with its playful, theatrical drama and a chant-along chorus.
  • Lyrically, it shares with pop culture honesty of contemporary heartbreak anthems, eviscerating a former partner labeled an "psychological bully".
  • Across these tracks, the singing have a painted-on edge, like a storybook character concealing a blade: "Gold medal in acting like a scoundrel / You have the podium of disappointment."

An Opulent Feast for the Ears

Lux represents pop on a grand scale, an ambitious grasp for capital-A Art in an era of looming AI-generated blankness. It rejects self-absorption for glorious elevation, creating a dramatic spectacle that masterfully controls its inherent ridiculousness. It is a deep source of buried treasure that takes time to fully explore but never feels like a chore. While some major pop albums of 2025 seemed like a meager scraps, Lux offers a sumptuous banquet at which the characters around the table, some tipsy on sacred drink, flutter from discussions about ancient figures, the galvanizing feeling of heartbreaking grief, and common stories about hopeless men. It is a modern-day theatrical production from pop's most endlessly inventive visionary.
