Federal Reserve Lowers Interest Rates for Second Instance This Calendar Year During Financial Instability

The US central bank lowered borrowing costs on Wednesday, marking the second rate cut in the current year amid financial volatility stemming from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.

Move Comes at Unprecedented Time for Federal Reserve

The decision to cut the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a span of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an unprecedented juncture for the Fed. The authority has been under significant strain to cut rates even with persistent inflation.

Central Bank Announcement Highlights Job Market Shifts

In a statement, the Federal Reserve stated that the unemployment rate had increased but remains low. “Employment growth have slowed,” the statement reads. “Inflation has risen and remains somewhat elevated.”

Federal Closure Hinders Central Bank’s Task

The ongoing government stoppage, now one of the longest in American history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Gathering of important economic data has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the BLS are on leave during the closure.

Information Shortage Impacts Policy Decisions

The Federal Reserve usually analyzes labor statistics to determine labor market conditions, including the count of employment gains added to the market and the present jobless percentage. The last jobs report was released in the beginning of last month, prior to the closure, and gave a relatively bleak overview of the jobs market in August.

The number of jobs created to the economy in the summer month was down by over 100k since the spring, and unemployment rose to 4.3% – the highest since 2021.

Alternative Reports Show Ongoing Slowdown

Though BLS was set to publish last month’s employment data in the start of last month, it halted its publication once the shutdown started. Private payroll firm ADP reported recently that the private sector eliminated thirty-two thousand positions in September, a indication that the employment landscape is still decelerating.

“Both the supply and demand for labor has declined quite sharply,” central bank head Jerome Powell stated earlier this month, which he had earlier said stems from immigration and tariff policies.

Price Data Shows Moderate Increase

Though BLS’s employment data has been paused, the agency still released its inflation report for last month that showed that costs are rising, albeit slowly. Costs rose 3% over the past twelve months, the highest since the start of the year. In spring, the yearly price increase was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The Fed’s target inflation rate is 2%.
