European Union Might Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson Says

The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the US against five European individuals involved in combating digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official stated.

European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe such as the French president charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions targeted figures who have been central to efforts to introduce legislation governing US-based technology firms.

“For too long, European activists have led organised efforts to pressure US companies to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” wrote a senior US official online. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in condemning the move.

The bans were enacted on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, as well as several activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

The DSA is seen by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders contend the regulations are essential to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This disagreement threatens to become part of a far wider existing political and ideological clash between Washington and Europe.

  • Approval was given for the deployment of 350 national guard members to a major US city ahead of the holiday period, coinciding with an ongoing immigration enforcement operation.
  • The nation of Palau has agreed to take in dozens of individuals from the US in return for additional aid, following signing a memorandum of understanding with US authorities.

Furthermore, a congressional representative has filed a lawsuit seeking the removal of a political figure’s name from a prominent cultural institution in Washington DC.

Analysts have also noted that comments regarding foreign petroleum resources align with a broader belief in certain circles of “resource imperialism”, drawing comparisons with historical international actions.
